A. James Rambo died on Friday at the age of 76.

"Jimmy was a friend, mentor, and brother to us all. He knew every officer in town, as he was very involved with the FOP and was always there to greet you with that smile and laugh we all know," the department said on its Facebook page.

Det. Sgt. Rambo served his community in Gloucester County faithfully for 25 years as a Monroe Township police officer.

Rambo spent time in patrol, prior to becoming a detective and later retiring as Detective Sergeant in 2004. His former colleagues described his service as kind, fair, cheerful, and hard working. He set the standard for compassion, they said,

"People that he arrested would often thank him as they were leaving the station," the Facebook post said. "It is rumored that he liked to torment some of his superiors with his pranks and humor that everyone enjoyed. He led by example and shaped the minds of many that followed behind him."

If you don’t recall seeing Rambo as a police officer, you may remember him back in the day playing the saxophone at Geet’s Diner, as he was an accomplished player since his childhood and often played locally. He also played the piano and organ.
